How Baby Massage Can Help Your Baby’s Sleep And Bedtime Routine
Every new parent knows the challenge of sleepless nights. Whether it’s frequent waking, restlessness or difficulty settling, it can leave both you and your baby feeling exhausted. While unfortunately there’s no magic fix, baby massage is a gentle, nurturing practice that can help make a difference in helping your little one relax and drift into more restful sleep.
💤 Builds a Soothing Bedtime Routine
Babies really thrive on routine and a massage can be a beautiful part of winding down at the end of the day. Many parents find it works best after a warm bath, when baby is already calm and relaxed. By following bath time with gentle massage and then bedtime, your baby begins to associate these steps with sleep. Over time, this familiar routine helps them settle to sleep more easily.
🌙 Creates Calm and Relaxation
Gentle massage helps your baby’s body release oxytocin – often called the “love hormone.” This hormone helps reduce stress and promotes a sense of calm, bonding and safety. As your baby relaxes, their breathing slows, and their body becomes ready for sleep.
🧘♀️ Relieves Tension in Body and Mind
Just like adults, babies can carry tension from overstimulation or growth spurts. Massage eases tightness in muscles and helps calm their nervous system, making it easier for them to let go of the day and rest peacefully.
💨 Eases Discomforts That Disrupt Sleep
Discomfort from wind, colic or teething can often disturb your baby’s rest. A soothing tummy massage or gentle strokes can ease these discomforts, allowing your baby to fall asleep and stay asleep for longer stretches.
🤱 Strengthens Bonding and Security
Massage is a special time of closeness between you and your baby. The eye contact, touch and gentle rhythm help them feel safe and loved. Babies who feel secure are more likely to relax deeply and settle into restorative sleep.
A final, gentle note…
Every baby is unique and sleep patterns can vary from child to child. Baby massage isn’t about a “quick fix” but about creating calm, comfort and connection. Over time, these moments of gentle touch can help your baby enjoy more restful sleep – and give you a little more rest too.
If you’d like to learn soothing massage techniques to support your baby’s sleep, I run small, relaxed, baby-led classes in Winchmore Hill, North London. They’re a lovely way to spend time together, meet other new parents and create calming routines that support your baby’s development.
