Giggly Goose’s Sensory Story Time - Supporting Early Development Through Story Telling, Sensory Play & Connection

At Giggly Goose’s Sensory Story Time, each session is carefully designed by me to nurture your baby’s development while creating calm, joyful moments for you to share together.

Suitable for babies from around 6 months to 18 months, these gentle, baby-led classes, bring favourite children’s books to life through expression, sensory play, textures, movement and music - all within a warm, welcoming environment.

What Happens in a Sensory Story Time Class?

Each week, a carefully chosen children’s book forms the heart of the session. The story is explored using:

  • Soft fabrics and textured materials

  • Puppets and simple props

  • Gentle movement and music

  • Songs and rhymes

Babies are encouraged to explore at their own pace, whether that means watching quietly, reaching out to touch, moving their bodies or simply cuddling close while listening to the story.

There is no pressure to “perform” or join in - everything is baby-led, respectful and responsive to each child’s individual stage of development.

How Sensory Story Time Links to the EYFS (6–18 months)

Although classes are relaxed and playful, everything we do supports the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) areas of learning in a natural, meaningful way.

🌱 Prime Areas of Learning

Communication & Language

Stories, songs, repeated phrases and expressive storytelling support:

  • Early listening and attention skills

  • Understanding of words and simple language

  • Early communication, gestures and sounds

Babies learn language best through repetition, rhythm and shared attention - all at the heart of sensory storytelling.

Physical Development

Through reaching, grasping, crawling, standing and moving to music, babies develop:

  • Gross motor skills (large movements)

  • Fine motor skills (grasping, touching, exploring textures)

  • Body awareness and coordination

Movement is always optional and guided by each baby’s ability and confidence.

Personal, Social & Emotional Development

Sensory Story Time supports:

  • Secure attachment through shared experiences

  • Confidence in new environments

  • Emotional regulation through calm, predictable routines

Being close to a trusted adult while exploring supports babies to feel safe, curious and confident.

🌈 Specific Areas of Learning (Introduced Gently)

Literacy (Early Foundations)

While babies aren’t learning to read, they are developing:

  • A love of books

  • Familiarity with stories and pictures

  • Early narrative understanding

This builds strong foundations for later literacy.

Understanding the World

Through sensory materials, sounds and themes, babies begin to:

  • Explore cause and effect

  • Experience new textures and sounds

  • Develop curiosity about their surroundings

Expressive Arts & Design

Music, movement, visual props and imaginative play encourage:

  • Self-expression

  • Creativity

  • Listening to sounds, moving their bodies and enjoying interesting things to look at

How the Classes Support Your Baby’s Development

Sensory Story Time helps your baby to:

  • Build early language and communication skills

  • Strengthen physical development through movement and exploration

  • Develop curiosity and concentration

  • Feel secure and confident in new environments

  • Experience calm, regulated sensory input

All of this is done in a way that respects where your baby is right now, not where they “should” be.

Benefits for Parents & Carers

These classes are just as valuable for you as they are for your baby.

Parents and carers benefit from:

  • Quality, uninterrupted bonding time

  • Learning simple ideas to continue sensory play and storytelling at home

  • Increased confidence in supporting your baby’s development

  • A calm space to slow down and enjoy the moment

  • Connection with other parents on a similar journey

As an experienced early years practitioner, I design each session to feel supportive, inclusive and reassuring, especially for those navigating early parenthood.
